Touch of Faith Ministry - Preaching 101

Course Description

The purpose of this course is to study the art and science of preaching. Emphasis will be placed on speaking skills: Voice and Style, Body Action, Bible Reading, the proper use of Humor, Doctrinal Accuracy, the use of Thematic Illustrative Stories, visual aids and choosing descriptive analogies and/or specific data.

 

Each student will participate in the preaching experience in the classroom and local church worship setting. The purpose of this class is to develop and train lay-persons in the art of verbally communicating the twenty eight fundamental doctrines of the Seventh-day Adventist Church.

 

First Class (Focus on the head of the Bumblebee)

· Eyes: see the difficulties that the congregation faces

· Tentacles: sensing the physical and emotional needs of the congregation

· Mouth: asking questions to discover what the state of the congregation

 

Second Class

· Wings: How to escape the situation

· Stinger: The Who, What or Why success isn't achieved

 

Third Class

· Feet: landing your sermon.

            

Fourth Class

· Body: Source of your information. How you prove your AIM.

 

Fifth Class (SPEAKING SKILLS)

· Voice: volume, inflection, and pace.

· Style: emotion, diction, language, and familiar descriptive vocabulary.

· Body action: poise, eye contact, posture, gesture, and movement.

 

Sixth Class

· Expressive Bible Reading: emphasis, tone variation, and expression.

· Humor: balanced humorous statements, no sexual, racial, and religious obscenities.

 

Seventh Class (CONTENT)

· Doctrinal Accuracy: communication, comprehension, and biblical interpretation.

· Thematic Illustrative Story: related story to enhance factualness of message.

      

Eighth Class

· Visual Aids: originality, kind of visual aid used relating to assigned topic.

· Example Selection: description analogies, and specific data.

Attendance

This is a class on preaching. In order of us to learn to construct our sermons together, regular attendance is required.

Note: Every student should acquaint themselves with several significant commentaries and the counsel from E. G. White on preaching (sermons).

Definitions:

Expository preaching: The communication of a biblical concept, derived from and transmitted through a historical, grammatical, literary study of a passage in its context, with the Holy Spirit first applies to the personality and experience of the preacher, then through him to his hearers.

Exegesis: To draw out the meaning of a passage by studying the background, the author, the historical and cultural setting, the original audience and the context in which the passage was used.
